The National Flood Insurance Program & Changes in Coastal Risk Factors

August 26, 2016 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

In the face of remarkable growth and urbanization in southwest Florida, communities face the daunting challenge of implementing sound land use policy and preparing for changes in climate impacts. Floodplain management and local land use policies have a direct impact on the economic and social wellbeing of our communities, as well as safety. This presentation will explore the history of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), offer examples of how land use decisions today will impact affordability tomorrow, review how local decisions on land development policies can dramatically impact a community’s safety, and examine steps that can be taken to become more resilient and safe.
